Much of the software discussion seems to be about older versions of the software than the ones you actually download. The XR18 includes a high-resolution 100-band Real Time Analyzer (RTA), with full Bar and Spectrograph views. In the little time I've had it I have wandered through the features and controls and spent most of my time wondering how things work, what they do, and how to control them. The iPad control is amazing and makes live performance without a sound operator so much easier. It has every feature you could want and many more. Just quietly, I think this is going to be one of those products from Behringer that will no doubt change the way in which we look at live sound in the future. As far as I can tell this is a great mixer. It integrates seamlessly with my DAW (Cakewalk Sonar) and sounds fantastic. Combined with a PC, the free software and an iPad, I can finally spend time making music instead of trying to kluge together a rats nest of pro-sumer gear with unpredictable results. USB sound cards aren’t our favorite way to connect an audio mixer to an iPad. The Behringer X 32 mixer is groundbreaking for the home studio owner. USB sound cards aren’t our favorite way to connect an audio mixer to an iPad. Plug the 1/8 (3.5 mm) jack into the microphone input on the sound card. Plug the 1/8 (3.5 mm) jack into the microphone input on the sound card. Plug the sound card into the iPad adapter.

The XR18 even doubles as a USB audio interface with 18 input channels into your recording software. Plug the sound card into the iPad adapter. Best of all, you can store your mixer settings for different bands, venues and applications for a quick recall and setup. With 18 Midas preamps in the box, you get great audio quality on the way in and with 6 ends on XLR along with master outputs also on XLR, there are a number of setup options. The mixer app then gives you access to all the features you would expect on a large format console, just controlled from your tablet. The stage box itself is quite compact and built into a tough and sturdy case, so it can be left on the floor on stage without fear of it being broken. Now, you can imagine how convenient this is going to be. We’ll replace that with a Wi-Fi signal that transmits from the stage box to the mobile mixing console. Then take away that bulky multicore, after all, they just get in the way.

Now, imagine that mixer was able to be moved, and carried in one hand so you could access control from any vantage point within the room. The stage box takes all the inputs and runs them along a long, bulky and expensive multicore cable back to the mixer, which is located at the other end of the room, unable to be moved.

The mixer comes with a copy of Tracktion 4 Audio Production software which provides unlimited. So, consider the common setup for a large console in a live venue. Behringer X18 - Compact 18-Input Digital iPad/Tablet Mixer. It really is quite a clever design and one that was so obvious, that I am surprised that no one else thought of it first.

All that is needed to complete the console is an iPad or Android tablet to use as a controller interface and the XR18 is ready to go. Then it dawned on me, this was the mixer. At first, I thought there was some kind of mistake as I was supposed to be testing out a mixer and all I got was the stage box.
